Progress Avenue Bridge Closure and Demolition Works
What is Happening
The Progress Avenue bridge over McCowan Road and adjoining infrastructure will be demolished ahead of the future construction of the Scarborough Centre Subway Station. This work will occur in four key stages as follows:
Stage 1
The Bushby Drive and Progress Avenue ramps to McCowan Road will permanently close on July 12, 2024. The ramps and adjoining infrastructure, underpass, retaining walls and the SRT pedestrian bridge are expected to be removed between July 12 and early September.
Stage 2
The Progress Avenue bridge over McCowan Road, between Consilium Place/ Grangeway Avenue and the intersection to the west of McCowan which leads into Scarborough Town Centre will be closed permanently on August 16, 2024. Following the Progress Avenue closure, asphalt, street lighting and other fixtures will be removed, and samples of concrete and soil will be taken for analysis.
Stage 3
The Progress Avenue bridge will be demolished during the Labour Day long weekend, August 30 – September 3, 2024, with full closure of McCowan Road from Bushby Drive to Corporate Drive. Buses will continue to be able to access Triton Road. Vehicular traffic will continue to be able to access the southbound McCowan offramp to Scarborough Town Centre. The full closure of McCowan Road will begin after 8 p.m. on August 30 and continue until 5:00 a.m. on September 3, 2024. Following the demolition work, crews will remove debris and restore the roadway prior to 5:00 a.m. on September 3, 2024.
Note: Demolition of the east and west approaches to the bridge, including abutments, stairs and other infrastructure will continue throughout September.
Stage 4
The Bushby Drive ramp, closed since July 12, along with the north retaining wall and the SRT pedestrian bridge spanning over the Bushby Drive ramp and linking to the former McCowan station, will be demolished between August 26 and September 18, 2024.
