Our History

  1973
Scarborough Town Centre opens at the geographical centre of the city of Scarborough on May 2, 1973. The gleaming new 130-store shopping centre and the adjacent civic buildings provide something previously lacking in this rapidly growing city of 200,000 -- a vibrant "downtown" core, a "beating heart."

"For the first time, private enterprise and public institutions were prepared to hold hands -- the winner could be the public." Scarborough Town Centre is just across the square from the Civic Centre. The pleasant, people-friendly square is two-thirds the size of Toronto's Nathan Philips Square, and was carefully constructed around a stand of trees preserved from the original 170-acre parcel of land.

The twin level, Y-shaped Shopping Centre features a Centre Court with a giant turntable built into the floor, and two secondary courts; one with a captivating water fountain with glass spheres and bubbling tubes, and the other with colourful hot air balloons rising and falling over a tranquil pool. Originally anchored by Eaton's, Simpsons and Miracle Food Mart, Scarborough Town also boasted one of the few Brewers Retail stores located within a Shopping Centre, and the first to contain a completely refrigerated storeroom.

At Scarborough Town Centre's Taste of the Town, visitors could enjoy a meal or snack under a vaulted double-glazed glass ceiling that let the sun shine in.

  1979
As Scarborough grows, so too does Scarborough Town Centre. With the opening of another 240,000 square feet of spectacular shopping space, an eager public is treated to a brand new two-level Bay store, plus additional stores.

  1985
A new Light Rapid Transit system opens, directly linking Scarborough Town Centre to the TTC subway system at Kennedy Station. The Centre is now east-end Toronto's most important transportation hub. In addition to the LRT station, Scarborough Town Centre is a busy terminus for a significant number of TTC bus routes, as well as GO Transit.

  1998
Scarborough Town Centre makes shopping a thrilling experience by opening an additional 177,000 square feet of space devoted to entertainment! A brand new two-level Indigo Books, Music and Café is designed to be the ultimate browse-and-buy experience. Famous Players Coliseum opens 12 state-of-the-art theatres with stadium-style seating and a lobby loaded with video games and movie snacks. HMV also moves into this new "experiential" area of Scarborough Town Centre. In addition to the excitement of a whole new wing, more improvements were reaching fruition. The Bay added a whole new floor and Sears completed extensive renovations giving shoppers bigger, better stores with more merchandise than ever before. Now more than 220 stores await visitors to Scarborough Town Centre!
